This would be true of anything you put on top of your car, but maybe the sleeker hardtop carriers are more aerodynamic? Overall highly recommend. When I was driving, it felt to me as though, particularly at high speeds or in high winds, the cartop carrier was affecting handling. * Car handling/gas mileage - May affect car's handling and gas mileage. It still has good life left, but if we did another big trip that'd probably be the end. * Wear and Tear - After 3,000+ miles we did notice small tears starting to develop along the front edge of the carrier. Not a deal breaker, considering that this item is $60 and the hardshell ones are $600, but still a bit inconvienent. CONS * Security - It's zippered closed with two pretty small zipper pulls, and they give you this tiny little lock to put through the zipper pulls, but it wouldn't be hard for someone to break into it, so we unloaded it each time we stopped for the night.
It almost completely freed up the entire back of our car. We fit 2 children's suitcases, 1 large duffle bag, a Pack-n-Play, and assorted other small bags in with no problem at all. We drove through driving rain, and as long as you follow the installation instructions and protect the zippered area with the covering flap, your stuff will be dry.
